Tips to stay safe if a contractor comes to your home or office

While Oregonians are staying home to help slow the spread of the coronavirus, you may need to have a contractor visit or enter your home or office

Gov. Kate Brown’s stay-at-home order requires contractors follow social distancing guidelines from the Oregon Health Authority, including maintaining at least 6 feet between people, washing hands after contact with any surface and avoiding groups of people.

If you have a plumber, electrician, HVAC technician or other contractor coming to your home or office for construction or maintenanceOregon Occupational Safety and Health recommends you follow these steps to prevent potential exposure:

  • Clean and sanitize the work area before workers arrive
  • Make sure workers sanitize the work areas themselves when they arrive, throughout the workday and immediately before they leave
  • Limit the number of people on site to essential people only
  • Keep household pets away from the work area
  • Stay at least 10 feet away from workers
  • Do not pay in cash or check, use electronic payments over the phone or online
  • Make sure workers wash hands before starting and after completing their work
