The Beaverton Year-Round Shelter is Washington County’s first-ever year-round shelter, offering transitional housing and 24/7 services for up to 60 individuals on any given day of the year. It provides sleeping areas, meals, showers, case management support and access to mental health and employment resources for people experiencing homelessness.
The 12,040-square-foot space, which was originally constructed in 1984 as a commercial site, is an exciting example of adaptive reuse—and an inspiring example of project team members working together. In less than three years, the City of Beaverton, Washington County and Open Door HousingWorks were able to address a vital public need.
Aided by design support and $46,200 in cash incentives from Energy Trust of Oregon, the Beaverton shelter incorporated many energy-efficient features into its human-centered design, which will help keep building operations affordable for the long term, with an estimated annual energy cost savings of $16,900.
“Through our design and funding partnerships, we provided what I believe is the most successfully designed shelter in the metro area. It’s sustainable, beautiful, healing and inspirational.”
—Sara King, senior development project manager for the City of Beaverton
