Lake Oswego’s new aquatics center shows commitment to sustainable design and community health

Indoor swimming pool facility with multiple lanes separated by blue and white dividers. Yellow and blue triangular flags hang above the pool. Swimmers are in the water, and others stand or walk along the pool deck. The space is brightly lit with white ceiling panels and large windows. A mural with abstract shapes and a stylized figure decorates the far wall. Starting blocks at each lane suggest competitive use.

The all-new Lake Oswego Recreation and Aquatics Center (LORAC), which opened in June 2025, is a marvel of efficient design, engineering, construction and community outreach. The stunning ground-up complex features a 4,500-square-foot recreational pool and 7,250-square-foot gymnasium, plus classrooms, exercise rooms and offices for the Lake Oswego Parks and Recreation Department.

LORAC is an investment in the future of its community, from the 12-lane, 25-yard competition-level pool that will host Lake Oswego Public Schools’ next generation of aquatics teams to the comfort and long-term sustainability of energy-efficient water heating, natural light, on-site water treatment, backup power systems and much more.

Through $142,000 of incentives — including a Solar Development Assistance incentive — Energy Trust of Oregon helped LORAC’s designers and builders implement efficiency features that will lead to an estimated annual energy cost savings of $77,300, including 326,400 estimated kilowatt hours saved annually, plus 28,000 annual therm savings. Together, we helped the path to efficiency progress as smoothly as possible — and looking at the beautiful results, we’d say it went swimmingly.

“I’m proud of completing another project that serves a large community and provides a place of fitness, health, wellness and well-being that is accessible, inclusive and affordable.”
— Jennifer Marsicek, principal at Scott Edwards Architecture
