In American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy’s 2017 City Energy Efficiency Scorecard Report, Portland tied with Los Angeles as the fourth most energy-efficient city in the nation, up from eighth place in the 2015 report.

The biennial ACEEE City Energy Efficiency Scorecard measures the progress of city policies and programs that save energy while benefiting the environment and promoting economic growth. Fifty-one cities in the U.S. were ranked for their energy-efficiency efforts in five policy areas, including local government operations, community-wide initiatives, buildings, energy and water utilities, and transportation.

Portland was noted as a leading city in three of the five policy areas: local government operations, community-wide initiatives and transportation policies. The city earned top marks due in part to the adoption of the City of Portland’s Climate Action Plan and greenhouse gas emission reduction goals, various community engagement approaches including Climate Action Now!, and its mode share and vehicle-miles-traveled reduction goals.

The energy-efficiency efforts of Energy Trust of Oregon, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, Portland General Electric, Pacific Power, NW Natural, Cascade Natural Gas, Avista, Bonneville Power Administration and Oregon Department of Energy as well as state policies and Oregon Public Utility Commission regulations, continue to contribute to energy efficiency advancement throughout the state.
